Audience: Years 1-2

Test Kitchen: Everyday Materials is a lively, 30-minute science show designed to spark curiosity and deepen understanding of the material world. Led by an Enabler, the session uses interactive demonstrations and student volunteers to explore how everyday objects are made and why their properties matter.

Aims and Objectives:

By the end of the show, students will have learned that:
• The words we use to describe materials are called their properties.
• Objects may look similar but be made from different materials.
• Some materials conduct heat.
• Some materials are absorbent while others are waterproof.
• Scientists choose materials based on the job they need them to do.
• New materials are often created to solve everyday problems.

Students will also:
• Think creatively about the materials they encounter in daily life.
• Feel inspired to look more closely at the world around them.
